Casper Mattress Review – Is It Just Hype?

Casper rose to fame through the use of their slick online marketing campaigns which helped the brand to establish their position within the market. As you would expect, they’re primarily an online retail brand who deliver their mattresses to their customers in a compact box (hence the term bed in a box). In recent years, they have begun to sell their products from pop up locations around the country.

You can choose to purchase your mattress from Casper themselves or you could choose to buy from one of several online retailers such as Amazon or Target. The choice is yours as you’ll benefit from the same sleep trial and warranty whoever you buy from.

Once your mattress is delivered, you will need to pull it out of its box and let it unfold to full size which takes around a day. You’re then free to try it out at your leisure. 

If you need a new mattress in a hurry, look for a retailer offering same day delivery. 

How Much is a Casper Mattress?

Casper currently offer 4 different mattresses across their product range – but the one we’re reviewing here which is simply known as the Casper – retails for around $1000 for a queen size. This price does vary and occasionally there are special offers available through certain retailers.

The Casper is also available in two different thicknesses; 10 inches and 12 inches. The 12 inch version is usually more expensive but again this can vary. 

Now $1000 may sound like a lot of money for a mattress, but high-end mattresses are worth every penny as they come with very few disadvantages or weak points. They also typically last a lot longer than their cheaper counterparts.

Mattress Construction & Quality

This all foam mattress is constructed from a combination of memory foam and polyfoam. The two materials have been used across several different layers, each of which is designed to complement and enhance the others.

Both the 10 and 12 inch version come with four separate layers of foam and offer everything from pressure relief, motion isolation and overall support.

The top layer is made from comfort polyfoam for increased support and bounce. An unusual move as most foam mattresses use memory foam as their top layer. The reasoning is that polyfoam is more responsive which is an important feature for many people.

This 1.5 inch thick layer is comfortable to sleep on and performs well.

The second layer is made from 4 PCF which can be described as low to medium density. It’s a soft material and works well when combined with the top layer.

These two layers are marketed as comfort layers and are the ones which provide the majority of pressure relief and body conforming while sleeping or lying down. They’re also responsible for providing some of the support this mattress is known for.

The third layer is made from 2.5 PCF polyfoam and is referred to as transitional polyfoam, which is designed to act as a buffer or barrier. The purpose is to prevent you from sinking all the way through to the much denser support layer underneath.  

What makes this layer so unique is that it provides zoned support. This means that its firmness changes throughout the length of the mattress.

In practice, this means that your shoulders lie within the softer zone to ensure that any pressure is relieved for side sleepers. Very important to avoid aches and pains in the morning.

In contrast, your hips lie on a firmer layer to promote good spinal alignment and sleeping posture.

The bottom layer is the support core which consists of 7.5 inches of 1.8 PCF high-density polyfoam. This layer provides a stable base and prevents the mattress sagging while supporting the layers above.

This support layer also enhances edge support, important for those who like to sleep or sit right on the edge of their bed.

The cover is made from a combination of spandex and polyester. The top surface is 100% polyester while the sides and bottom are a spandex polyester blend for added stretch. 

While the cover can be unzipped for cleaning, Casper recommend spot cleaning with a mild detergent. If you require a new cover, you can contact Casper directly for a replacement. 

Mattress Firmness

The Casper is best described as having a medium feel in terms of firmness, a true 5 on the scale. This makes it suitable for most people of average size and weight.

Due to its design, this mattress is far more supportive than its all-foam counterparts as it uses polyfoam as the top sleeping layer. This results in comfort without sacrificing support.

If you weigh more than average, we would suggest seeking out Casper’s hybrid mattress which is a little firmer and will be more suitable for your needs. We feel that this mattress could sag under heavier loads which could harm the shoulders and hips due to added pressure and poor spinal alignment.  

Due to its unique design and zoned support approach, we found this mattress to be a good fit for all sleeping positions.

Most back sleepers should find this mattress to provide adequate support and a comfortable sleeping surface. The increased support beneath the hips keeps the body aligned naturally while still offering a good cradle. Those who want more sink should take a look at the Casper Wave and those looking for more firmness should take a look at the Casper Hybrid.  

Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief afforded by the zoned support system and the layer of memory foam. Your body’s curves are supported with good contouring for optimal spinal alignment.  

Stomach sleepers are well catered for, again thanks to increased firmness underneath the hip region. Spinal alignment is very important for stomach sleepers as this position can cause issues if you aren’t sleeping on the right mattress or if you’re heavier than average.

Combination sleepers will love this mattress as it adapts well to those who frequently change position throughout the night.
